Its an Emergency!

An emergency is anything which causes a pet owner to be alarmed. It’s always better to be cautious when it comes to your pet’s health. We have listed below a few common emergencies and how best to asses the situation.

  • If you have any concerns regarding your pet, please contact us at (954) 653-6868

  • Remain calm. Your pet can become more stressed by seeing you in a panic.

  • Inform our staff about your pet’s condition over the telephone before you arrive.

Common Emergency Tips

PET HAS INGESTED OR EATEN SOMETHING

  • Contact us at (954) 653-6868, you may be directed to contact Animal Poison Control (1-888-426-4435).

  • Be prepared to bring your pet to the animal hospital. Certain toxins and drugs have antidotes, which our veterinarians can administer.

  • Always bring the packaging or vial that the suspected substance was kept in. The label will provide information such as the main ingredient and its concentration.

  • If your pet's skin was exposed to a chemical or insecticide, wrap in a towel or blanket so you do not come in contact with your skin, when bringing to the hospital.

PET IS HAVING VOMITING AND DIARRHEA

Be prepared to bring your pet to Pet Express as soon as possible. Contact us at (954) 653-6868

  • Look at the surrounding area and see if your pet might have injested something.

  • Excessive vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, especially in small dogs and cats which requires medical attention.

  • Do not give your pet any over-the-counter medication such as Imodium or Pepto-Bismol.

PET HAS TOUCHED A BUFO TOADS: The toxins produced by these toads cause serious nervous system and cardiac problems. Symptoms include: disorientation, excessive drooling/foaming from mouth, and seizures.

If your pet is not seizing and is conscious, flush the mouth with running water from a hose in the corner of the mouth. Do not let your pet drink the water. If your pet is seizing, unconscious, falling over, or becomes very stiff, come to our hospital immediately. Click here for more information on Bufo toads.
